With our world becoming more connected in terms of social media and technology, it is becoming much easier to make money from home and become your own boss. Here are some of the many advantages of being your own boss:
- Freedom to make decisions
Since you don’t report to upper management, you are the boss. You don’t have to ask anyone to make a decision and there’s great satisfaction in being able to just act based on your intuition.
- No set working hours
Are you more productive in the mornings or afternoons? Do you have to take the kids to and from school? You are responsible for choosing when you want to work as long as you are meeting all your tasks required to run your business.
- Your own working space
You have the power to choose how you want to decorate your working space. Fancy a fresh bouquet of flowers, rose gold decor and cute stationery that screams ‘GIRL POWER’? Feel free to add it to your space. No one’s going to tell you “no!” 😉
- No set location
Say goodbye to the dreaded daily commute to and from work. Want to work in the comfort of your home? You can do it! Want to work at a cafe with a cup of coffee and your laptop? You can do it! Want to work and travel to another country? You can do it! You can work from anywhere you want.
Like anything, there are also some disadvantages of being your own boss including having to spend your own money, the fact that you earn what you earn, and doing taxes (I hate taxes with a passion!). In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages by far!
8 Creative Ways You Can Make Money From Home
1. Launch a blog
Blogging is a very lucrative stream of income once you have established yourself on the internet. It is important to note that blogging isn’t a get-rich scheme. It is very hard to become a successful full-time blogger but with dedication and resilience, it can be a very rewarding career once you have your foot through the door.
There are a range of methods that bloggers make money including sponsored posts, brand collaborations, affiliate marketing, and selling their own products and/or services. We’ll talk about this in a future post 😉
If you love writing, connecting with others, and sharing your passion, launch a blog! You may never know where it will take you.
2. Start an Etsy shop
If you ooze creativity and frequently get comments saying “You should sell this!”, take the plunge and start an Etsy shop. Etsy is an online platform that sells handmade products from a bunch of individual creatives worldwide. It makes a great stepping stone to launching your online handmade business since you don’t require any web design skills, and there is already a huuuuuge audience ready to purchase unique products.
3. Become a tutor
If you are knowledgeable in a particular subject, offer tutoring services! Aside from the usual face-to-face tutoring sessions, you can tutor over Skype which means that you’re able to sell your services to the worldwide community. Thank you, Internet!
Here are some great online tutoring sites that you can use:
4. Offer an online course
Do you have an expertise or skill you want to share with others? Offer an online course!
It may sound difficult to start but Teachable will make it a whole lot easier. It is a nifty platform that allows you to create and sell your online courses where there are over 7 million students available. You are able to customise the layout of your class in any way you want which is great because you can align it with your branding.
5. Start a photography business
Are you snazzy with the camera? Are your family and friends always wanting you to take their photos? Try starting a photography business! With so many areas you could specialise in, here are some suggestions:
- Stock photos
You don’t have to specialise in one particular area, you can be an all-round photographer – get snappin’ 🙂
6. Become a social media manager
Social media marketing is becoming a huge element for many businesses where a large proportion of their target market are active on social media. This means that there is either an in-house social media manager or a freelance social media manager(s) to manage their social media platforms. The latter is where you come in.
With your savvy social media expertise and ability to converse with their target market in a manner that reflects the brand, you can become a social media manager! This position includes creating and posting content, staying engaged with their community, analysing social media analytics, and finding strategies to improve sales/engagement.
As a freelance social media manager myself, it is important to understand the business’ values and branding to ensure that their social media pages will reflect it. If you would like to know more about this, feel free to send me an email and we can chat!
7. Become a virtual assistant
Virtual assistants (VAs) are online assistants that help their clients manage their workload where they perform administration work, data-base entry and other ad-hoc duties.
In my opinion, the best place to find VA (and other freelance) jobs is Upwork where you can work for businesses and brands anywhere in the world!
8. Become a freelance graphic designer
Illustrations, photo editing, and website design are in huge demand. To all the illustrators and creative designers, start your journey into becoming a freelance graphic designer!
The toughest hurdle is to score your first client. Take the time to create your own designs for your portfolio and show potential clients what you can offer.
Don’t be afraid to be your own boss!
I hope these ideas have sparked your entrepreneurial senses and made you realise that it is possible to make money from home. It is rewarding to be able to work for yourself and build your brand. However, with every business venture, it requires hard-work, dedication, and passion.
Until next time xo
